@saeb, I'm not sure this is the right translation.

saeb saeb December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 3:02:55 PM UTC link Permalink

*scratches his head* seems ok, am I missing sth?

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 4:48:44 PM UTC link Permalink

What about:

قابلته في يوم من الايام
قابلته في أحد الايام

That is, if you translated: "I met him one day".

As for myself, I usually regard "yawman" as the opposite of "laylan", but I now realize that "naharan" is actually the opposite of "laylan". Anyhow, what do you think about my suggested formulations?

saeb saeb December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 5:22:30 PM UTC link Permalink

yup you're suggestions are totally fine^^ (actually I beat you to adding them(!))

يوماً in the sense of "morning" IMHO is archaic...so unless it's an old book...just assume it doesn't mean that :P

do you still think this should be modified?

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 7:11:55 PM UTC link Permalink

Thanks :)
If, despite my comment, you believe that "yawman" is tantamount to "one day" in the current context (and conveys that same meaning which I tried to convey in my variants), then you don't have to change anything. I'll add my variants.

>If, despite my comment, you believe that "yawman" is >tantamount to "one day" in the current context (and conveys >that same meaning which I tried to convey in my variants)

sure it does (at least to me it seems so)
...I still don't get what's bothering you about it...
I'll try some time later to post some quotes from respectable sources just for the record...

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 9:49:09 PM UTC link Permalink

First, it's ok, of course I will be glad to read the quotes, but I understand now that it was ok. It's not easy to explain what bothered me about it, well, it simply didn't sound to me that "one day", just any day, in the past, would be adequately rendered by the simple "yawman".

But it can happen. Arabic is not my mother tongue, although I read much in it and once in a while write in it. You are a native speaker, and I certainly trust your senses in this regard (I also keep reading your sentences, and as I told you in the past, I am very fond of them).

Second, I was flattered that you adopted my variants and based your extra translations of the current sentence on them.

saeb saeb December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 10:43:02 PM UTC link Permalink

I was just a bit confused because it's a common usage...what else...you know my reply to the "arabic is your native tongue" argument so...thanks for the compliment^^ 本当やめてほしいってば、恥ずかしいから...and...keep those comments coming!

all things aside, here is some quotes:

Thank you very much, saeb. You live and learn, seems I wasn't aware of this usage at all.

This is what I like about Tatoeba: I have my favorite contributors, I read their sentences and keep enriching my vocabulary ^^

saeb saeb December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 10:53:19 PM UTC link Permalink

Be my guest!

Oh, and please add, on your part, some new Hebrew sentences, for the sake of reciprocation!^^

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2010 December 15, 2010 at 11:51:35 PM UTC link Permalink

Oh, I'm pleased!
My mere comment really contributed so many sentences, it did prove fruitful after all ;-)

by the way, it should have been "reciprocity" ^^
Seems I need to hit the sack, it's really late already.
