Welches ist das wahrscheinlichste ?
(Leider braucht man bei "besuchen" ein Objekt)

Meiner Ansicht nach würde "zu Besuch" besser klingen als "auf Besuch". Letzteres hat vermutlich eine regionale Färbung.

Vermutlich. In Österreich ist "auf Besuch kommen" sehr gängig. Inwieweit ein Etikett gerechtfertigt ist, kann ich nicht beurteilen. Der Duden gibt - zumindest für "sein" - beides ohne Unterschied an:
