personally, I'd say "from the hospital"
(but I'm not sure how Americans would say this).

Americans say "from the hospital," too.

In Britain I believe it's just "from hospital."

I'd say "from the hospital" in this sentence but would say:

Dan had to go to hospital after his accident
In this one "go to hospital" would imply to me that he was admitted.

We could say "go to the hospital" but, to me, that would just mean he went to the building and wasn't necessarily admitted to hospital. Eg: "I'm just going down to the hospital to visit Tom."

These are shades of meaning, and, interestingly the shades can be different according to the brand of English you speak.
