I feel this sentence is doesn't give the same meaning of the English one.

Can someone give me an example on using "No I'm not; you are!". A situation when I can use this sentence I mean.

I know no Arabic, but Google Translate offers two suggestions for ليس أنا ، بل أنت!

Not me, but you!

I am not, but you are!

If Google is correct with those suggestions, it would seem that just adding a لا ("No") and a comma at the beginning of the Arabic sentence would make it equivalent to the English.

An example that pops immediately to mind of how a sentence like this might arise would be that of a chronic serial liar like Donald Trump, in response to charges of his telling an untruth, just calling his opponent a liar in turn. We have to "consider the source," as they say.

So directly Adel suspected that Safi is the one who did that.

for me "I'm not" looks not true, because I feel like he should have said.
"No, I didn't, but you!"

Because if you tell someone you're fat and he is not he can say:
لا, أنا لست كذلك, بل أنت.

But if you tell him, you ate all the food, he can say:
لا, ليس أنا, بل أنت.

It depends if you describe him with a verb or with a noun.
The answer is different.

In English, these would be valid:

"You're fat!" "No, I'm not, [but] you are!"
[note: since "you are" is emphasized, you can't contract it to "you're"]

"You ate all the food!" "No, I didn't, you did!"

"It was you who ate all the food!" "No, it wasn't, it was you!"

So this sentence needs to be corrected. Or linked to another English sentence that says: "No, I didn't, you did!", and "لا, " should be added to the beginning of it.


The right translation for me for "No I'm not; you are!" is "لا, أنا لست كذلك, بل أنت."
