Isn't студент someone in higher education, while a "pupil" is still in school? Then "учеников" would be better.

I don't know if we make the distinction very much in U.S. English. To me, "students" are teenagers and older, whereas for the younger ones we could say "kids" or "children" (although that may just be me). But seeing as there's more of a distinction in Russian, I'm not sure how to proceed... I'll let the sentence go and you can change it if you like.

The dictionary definitions of "pupil" do mention younger ones, though I think a more common interpretation of the word now is that it is someone who is being educated directly by the teacher in private.

In either case, yes, I agree with you that учеников would be better.
