I'd like to say
"To lose faith in God is to lose your way."
but that might be a bit too loose a translation?

I don't like 'guideposts' much, but 'signposts' just doesn't seem to mean what I want it to mean there.

Second opinions welcomed.

To lose faith in God is to lose all of your Japanese tiger beetles. (thanks edict)

or maybe: to lose one's points of reference.
