The other one is now することに so this is an exact match. It could be changed to するのに (which is also valid, IMO) or it could be deleted.

Looking at the examples he gave he's probably talking about

彼は私のいることに気がついた。

(because こと might be a 名詞, but の certainly isn't)

ある友人は２、別の友人は４だと言っています。
私は・・・考えすぎて分からなくなりましたが、やはり２か４でしょうか・・・。１よりは３の方がいいと思いますが。
いずれも間違いではないし、意味もちゃんと通じます。
