"so afraid to" -> "very afraid of"
It would fit fewer situations. You could use it to indicate sarcasm: "Yes, they're SO scary. I know you're SO afraid of them." But "very" could be used for the same purpose, as well as for a greater variety of other circumstances.
This sentence sounds quite odd, in my opinion.
