I'm not keen on the 'the -> this' change.

Japanese has no direct equivalent of 'the' so 'this (この)' and 'that (その)' are often used instead. When you change 'the' to 'this/that' you are often changing the original version of the sentence to match the Japanese translation of it.

Yes, same for French, Pharamp. Afaik "ce/cet/cette/ces" is used much more often in French than "this" in English. It can often be translated with "the".
