「そんな」はここでは「そんなに」の略で like that といった意味です。「ゲーム」にかかっているわけではありません。

It sort of has this feeling.

You're going to wreck your eyesight if you play games so much.

Should we unlink this?

gillux gillux November 27, 2015 November 27, 2015 at 2:23:19 AM UTC link Permalink

I come to this sentence to ask unlinking as well. As you said, the Japanese is not about a game in particular but video games in general.

Maybe we can make a suggested change and wait 14 days for him to respond, then make the change.

I think this change needs to be made.

FROM:
Your eyesight's gonna be ruined if all you do is play that game.
TO:
You're going to wreck your eyesight if you play games so much.

Hs email is DISABLED, so my guess is we just need to wait the 14 days.

「ばっかり」はもちろん誇張ですが、英語にはこれに相当するような表現はありませんか?

It's wouldn't be unnatural for a parent to say "You're going to wreck your eyesight if ..." to his kid.

See google examples of "wreck your eyesight."

自然さを失わない範囲でより日本語に忠実にできないかという意味です。

CK CK November 27, 2015 November 27, 2015 at 2:50:46 AM UTC link Permalink

I think "your eyes will get bad" wouldn't sound natural, or at least wouldn't be the most natural way a parent would tell a child this.

そこの話はしていません。

そんなゲームばっかりしてたら
if you keep playing games all the time (?)

CK CK November 27, 2015 November 27, 2015 at 3:11:13 AM UTC link Permalink

These would work.

You're going to wreck your eyesight if all you do is play games.
You're going to wreck your eyesight if you play games all the time.

tommy_san tommy_san November 27, 2015 November 27, 2015 at 3:24:46 AM UTC link Permalink

... like that?

gillux gillux November 27, 2015 November 27, 2015 at 3:30:09 AM UTC link Permalink

CK, is this sentence correct regardless of the Japanese one? If so, it should not be modified, just unlinked.

Changed to match your suggestions. One thing to consider, the Japanese sentence (to me) clearly implies video games. In the English sentence, without context, that implication is less clear. Maybe the sentence could be "Your eyesight's gonna be ruined if all you do is play video games."

CK CK December 11, 2015, edited December 11, 2015 December 11, 2015 at 2:29:43 AM UTC, edited December 11, 2015 at 2:31:05 AM UTC link Permalink

The trouble with the phrase "video games" is that I think it doesn't really imply using smartphones, iPads, etc., which is nowadays probably the more likely meaning of ゲーム.

That fact that playing the game is likely to ruin your eyesight is maybe enough to imply playing a game on a device with a screen.
