In standard English, this would normally be "... he began to read it".

Perhaps a better match for the Japanese.

As soon as he got the novel, he began reading it.

I think the initial "Getting the novel, he..." is grammatically correct but sounds awkward to me and doesn't clearly indicate what is happening (it could refer to the act of fetching the novel from a nearby location, or be a statement about the time at which the novel became accessible). "As soon as he got the novel, ..." sounds more natural, although it's a more specific phrase so it might not match other translations.
