Is it better to say "passed THE examination"?
You could go either way, although I think 'the' would be good there. 'and was happy about it' sounds odder to me in that sentence.
Bump. Not very happy with the 'was happy about it'.
Wouldn't "He was happy to have passed the examination" be just as good?
I think that sounds a lot better. I think I'll change it to that as CK hasn't commented.
I think that if you have the first part of the sentence in past tense, you must use the past in the second part. I think that it is right the way that was wriiten
