Thanks for clarifying! I was misreading the sentence the whole time. So the idea is "going one mile upstream, there is a bridge over the river". I somehow thought of a bridge that is a mile over the ground. :D

I'm not in favour of expressing distance like "if you go this way, then it's distant", because "it's distant" is true no matter if "you go this way" or not. What about:
