Where is "in one night"?

Demetrius Demetrius September 20, 2010 September 20, 2010 at 8:35:20 AM UTC link Permalink

Maybe:
adamla > adamlar ?

I feel like the "lar" wouldn't be needed here for Uyghur (and possibly Turksih).

And it wouldn't be "adam", since that doesn't specify that they were men.

Hmm... When I think of it, in Tatar too. :o
They what is -la, exactly?

I think it's a possible variant. Using 'man' for 'person' is old-fashioned English, but, as far as I know, it's possible.

On -la:

My Turkish book is of no assistance... In Uyghur, -la is something you add on to the end of a word to mean "just" or "only". If that's true here, then boracasli is obviously not impressed with your accomplishment ("only 25 people?" or "25 and they were only people?")... Maybe you should try 50, or start killing tigers instead.

On adam:

I still think that it would only be acceptable for "man" when the context was clear, or when it didn't need to be specified. But here it's quite clear that the fact that they were men, and not women, must be stressed ;-)

Oh, boracasli...

Eugene, in Turkish, "25 adamlarla uyudu" is meaningless.
"25 adamla uyudu" is the correct.

It would be better if you explained what -la means and where "in one night" finds itself in this sentence (and why it's "adam").

boracasli: Demetrius and I request a Turkish lesson.

What is the proper use and meaning of -la?

Demetrius Demetrius September 20, 2010 September 20, 2010 at 5:09:07 PM UTC link Permalink

[18:08] <boracasli> "-la" is means "with"

Ok, next question: Where is "bir gece"?

Suggestion for CMs:

"Dima bir gecede 25 adamla yattı ve sonra onları öldürdü."

"Uyumak" doesn't imply a sexual act or so, whereas "(biriyle) yatmak" does.

Thanks, done.
