I believe it should be:
Ph.D. is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase - philosophiae doctor*.
I took the phrase from my diploma. It says: " . . . (My name) rite probatum ad Philosophiae doctoratum". "Doctoratum" may be a conjugation or declension of "Doktor". Let me look into it.
