The English translation of the Chinese sentence is not correct. The English should read: "By the 966th attempt, Dima was beginning to give up hope".

Thank you, grahambond.
The thing is there are too many sentences in other languages linked to this (wrong) variant, so it's not as easy as that to change it.
I believe you should post a correct variant, linking it to the Chinese.
And in the meantime, what should we do about this wrong translation?

OK, I checked it once again, all the other contributors are constantly here and will be able to change their own versions after we advise them of the current change. I'm therefore changing the English variant as per your correction.
FeuDRenais doesn't contribute to Tatoeba anymore, so we have to change the sentence ourselves.

I'm a brand new member and am unsure about how, one, the whole 'superstructure' works, and, two, how to go about making changes. Sorry. I just caught this mistake as I was browsing!:)

Oh, OK. Sorry, I posted the last message before I saw your second message.

Nothing to be sorry about :)
Thanks for your contribution!

But the original sentence is the English one, FeudRenais invented this whole Dima's adventures story, so I think it should be changed back to "By the time he tried the 966", and the one that should be changed is the Chinese sentence.

Really?
Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't know that.

What do you suggest? (I believe the current wording of the English makes more sense; furthermore, I read some of the other variants, they were rendered as if the current wording was indeed what was meant there - so I'm not really sure what to do now...).

Yes, have a look at the number of the sentences ;-)

(at least I'll know where to look from now on... ;-))

I suggest changing it back, because it did make sense with the rest of the story, and the Spanish and Esperanto sentences (at least) meant what it previously said, that he tried calling with the prefix 966

About making more sense - well, I see what FeuDRenais meant in the original sentence (so please disregard my previous comment on that ;-))
Should we simply undo the change, and inform the others to ignore my previous message?

I would do exactly that, mainly because it was a valid sentence and it had correct translations...And because (let's be honest) I like how I translated it into Spanish :P

:)
Done. Thanks!

Ah, yes, I came at this by looking at the Chinese sentence first and realising that the English made no sense against it. How about I suggest an alternative Chinese translation then: 当迪马尝试了打九六六的时候, 他开始了放弃希望。 This is the Simplified Chinese version. I don't know traditional Chinese very well so I won't offer that translation. I'll try and add this myself, but in case I get it wrong, you'll know to help!!!:)

Wow... what a discussion!
Thank you, Shishir, for conveying what I couldn't be here to convey. Indeed, the English was the original and it would have broken my heart to see it changed to something other.
(now I just need to find the time and inspiration to continue this whole Dima's Adventures thing...)

If you are here again, at long last, it will be much easier to discuss things ;-)
BTW, what does 966 mean here?

Oh, I see. You left a link above that explains everything. I now see what it means. Please disregard my previous message.
