unneeded space (after wa)

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 9:39:32 PM UTC link Permalink

that space keeps me sane :P

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 9:40:26 PM UTC link Permalink

(besides, all my sentences have it)

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 9:48:47 PM UTC link Permalink

(lol, this seems like a hotter topic than موضع تنوين الفتح)

Eldad Eldad November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 10:09:51 PM UTC link Permalink

Wow, keeps you sane?! ;-)
hotter than mawdu' tanwin al-fath? well, probably you're right ^^ I guess you say that because there were quite a few comments on that extra space. I like sentences to be perfect, even in terms of spaces :)

Eldad Eldad November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 10:11:33 PM UTC link Permalink

BTW, in Persian they do keep the extra space between the و and the following word, but not in Arabic (except for saebs and the like...^^)

Eldad Eldad November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 10:14:34 PM UTC link Permalink

indeed, mawda' at-tanween... Well, I asked myself many times where to put this tanween. Is it ok on the alef? :)

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 10:28:42 PM UTC link Permalink

for those who like to pretend that this isn't all new to arabic and that there's a 'real' قاعدة for it: it should be on the letter preceding the aleph

for ppl who use what's more common (like me): it should be on the aleph. Incidentally, الرسم العثماني للقرآن has it on the aleph (slightly to the right)[and no spaces between words at all :O]

>but not in Arabic
oh c'mooon! I always though it was more common ;)
proof: :P

Thanks!! (I was kidding ^^)

BTW, regarding no spaces between words at all, I believe this is how Arabic was written from the first place, right? That's why (among other things) the aleph has been added in the past plural, to make some sort of distinction between one word to the other.

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 10:59:17 PM UTC link Permalink

yup, no spaces, commas, or fullstops until recently this century...read a bit older manuscripts and تـ ثـ نـ ، فـ مـ all look the same...

(reminds me of debates on مئة vs مائة)

Eldad Eldad November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 11:14:51 PM UTC link Permalink

(what is your preference between them, مئة?)

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 11:19:22 PM UTC link Permalink

yeah, I can't remember the last time I saw مائة being used

saeb saeb November 19, 2010 November 19, 2010 at 11:26:50 PM UTC link Permalink

(lol google gives more results for مائة :O!)
