La vorteto "sin" jam esprimas, ke temas pri la subjekto mem. Aldoni "mem" estas pleonasmo.

Pleonasmo ja — tamen, miaopinie, ne forigenda. “Mortigis sin” similas al simpla “mortiĝis”; en multaj lingvoj (kaj mi kredas ke do ankaŭ en Esperanto) tia konstruo povas uziĝi eĉ por okazoj, kie ne la subjekto mem estas la mortiginto — ekzemple: “Li mortigis sin dum paraŝuta descendo”. Kontraŭe “mortigis sin mem” klare montras, ke temis pri suicido.

Kvankam — jes, la tuta frazo bonus ankaŭ sen tiu vorteto.
