Note to translators: This is probably not true of the Japanese "ame-otoko," but the phrase "rain man" reminds American (and probably other Anglophone) listeners of a movie called Rain Man, about a rich man who discovers he has a long-lost brother, Raymond, an autistic resident of an institution. So it looks as if these people are calling someone autistic because it rains whenever he goes outside!
"Rain Man" can be used as a synonym for "autistic" in very affectionate and admiring contexts, as well as a word for "socially awkward, but smart" in joking and mean-spirited situations. Careful with it now!
