Isn't this bad grammar?
I thought 'ever' was a clear indication of present perfect...?
(Maybe already wrong in the original Tanaka corpus?)

I could see this one working if the context is a trip or some other time period. It would be ok to ask the person if they ever went to x during *insert period of time here*.
