Who is "they" here?
Apart from that the sentence structure looks strange to me. Could a native comment, please?
"They" is the other person in the relationship. Non-gender third person pronoun.
I'm a native speaker, the structure might be ever so slightly odd because of "lies in", but to me it's totally acceptable.

I changed the first one to "your partner". That way it's totally clear this is about two-person relationships.

I don't think it's saying how good they are to themselves. Isn't it about how they treat you vs any kind of objective criteria?
