I just talked to a native English speaker and she told me it's not correct to use "the" in this sentence because it looks like a noun and not adjective.

Omission of Articles

Some common types of nouns that don't take an article are:

Names of sports: volleyball, hockey, baseball
Names of academic subjects: mathematics, biology, history, computer science
