why is this one in past tense?

Interesting question marcelostockle. It spontaneously came up past tense when I translated it into German:) I suspect that the English sentence is slightly ambiguous, depending on whether "wrong" refers to a belief which is ongoing and would require the present tense, or whether "wrong" means "false answer" which would have been calculated in the past. It may also have to do with the peculiarity of the word "irren". I'll put a @native check label on it.
