On dit plutôt un gros appétit ou un bon appétit.
Mais dans le cas présent, je pense qu'il s'agit plus d'avoir faim.
« J'avais une grosse fringale. »
« J'avais très faim. »
« J'avais une faim de loup. »
La faim est quelque chose de plus ou moins ponctuelle, tandis que l'appétit est une caractéristique plus générale. Si on a un gros appétit, on a souvent faim.
