A sentence can be severe, but a verdict cannot. Also, a sentence is given by a judge, not a court. I can change this sentence, but we need to look at the translations as well.

I changed the English. It looks like in both Russian and German, "verdict" (guilty or not guilty) and "sentence" (punishment) are covered by the same word.
