Das ist schon ein etwas "unglücklicher" Satz. Den Hubschrauber, der in der Lage ist abwärts zu starten, den möchte ich gern mal sehen. Aber warum sage ich das dem Übersetzer? Ich gebe zu mit gutem Willen kann man erraten, wie es gemeint ist.
Nur: lässt sich die Sache nicht sehr einfach lösen mit der Formulierung:

Ein Hubschrauber ist in der Lage, senkrecht zu starten und zu landen.

Mir scheint, das ist sogar die übliche deutsche Aussage zum Sachverhalt. Das das "up" und "down" dann keine wörtliche Entsprechung haben, schadet m. E. nicht, da in der Vorstellung von einem startenden bzw. landenden H. der jeweils dazugehörige Richtungssinn ohnehin mitgedacht wird.

Irgendwie hast du natürlich völlig Recht. Zumal ich ja selber nicht unbedingt auf wortwörtlicher Übersetzung bestehe, was ja manchmal auch nicht möglich ist.
Ich glaube, bei diesem Satz bin ich wohl damals geistig nicht so richtig vorwärts gekommen, so dass ich heute auf deinen senkrecht startenden Geistesblitz gern zurückgreifen würde. Besten Dank!
