"families" could be better instead of "family"

For your sake, OK.

In American English, the phrases "family and friends" and "family and loved ones" are used almost idiomatically. I'm sure if the choice were presented to 100 average Americans, at least 90 would choose "family and friends" over "families and friends". If it were re-cast as "people get together with their families and friends", I would agree with you.

Annotation:

"Family" is often used to refer to relatives in the extended family, not just your immediate family.
