I added it as another translation, but I feel that using the progressive tense is also a perfectly valid translation to the Italian sentence.

I am quite happy to trust that the translation is valid, it makes sense based on other Romance languages that the "to be + gerund" construction works, I'm just not sure that it works as an English sentence. It sounds, to me at least, slightly clumsy. I would, I believe, always say "I don't understand" over "I am not understanding".
