Do you have any recommendation on what might be a good rate limit?

I did find a post where you suggested 3000 original sentences per month in one language:
https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_39818
Just wondering if you still think it's a good rate limit, or do you perhaps have another opinion now?
Any particular reason why you suggested a monthly rather than a daily or weekly cap?

If I may share some additional insight, perhaps some people don't know, but Tatoeba used to have a mass import feature. Only admins could access it, but you could send a list of sentences to an admin and ask for them to be imported. The feature was disabled on January 2019 because we migrated CakePHP from v2 to v3, and we didn't feel it was urgent to migrate the mass import feature. It was for the best, I guess. I would say this feature was the main cause for the reduced lexical diversity of the English corpus.

It's not limited as far as I remember. What made you think it was?

** Wishing you all Happy Holidays! **

As we approach the end of the year, I’d like to wish you all a wonderful holiday season :)

I want to take this occasion to sincerely thank everyone who helped keep Tatoeba alive and running during my long absence. Even though I was not completely disconnected from the project this whole time, I certainly had to keep my involvement as minimal as possible for the past 12 months or so, due to becoming a mom[1].

I will return in 2024 and I hope it will be a more exciting year for Tatoeba, with many long-awaited changes finally coming true.

Take care, everyone, and see you around soon!

Thank you everyone ❤️

Dear Tatoebans,

A new chapter of my life is starting and I will have to take some time off from Tatoeba.

I am going to become a mom :)

Because of that, I have been quite unable to do much on Tatoeba in the past few weeks, in great part due to the constant fatigue that comes with the first months of pregnancy. And I expect the few months before and after giving birth to be even more demanding of my time and energy...

While I don't think I will be going completely radio silent, I certainly won't be very present and active on Tatoeba. So before we get to that point, I think now is a good occasion to try and find people to take over my responsibilities in Tatoeba.

This includes:
1) Adding new languages to Tatoeba
2) Managing the translators team in Transifex
3) Merging pull requests in GitHub
4) Deploying new changes on production
5) Investigating and fixing issues of Tatoeba being slow or not accessible
6) Guiding/assisting/mentoring people who are interested in contributing to the development of Tatoeba
7) Establishing new rules and guidelines when conflicts arise within the community

I hope I can do a live stream where I can explain a little bit more all these points. Perhaps in a month, when my fatigue attenuates a little bit (I've heard it gets better in the second trimester of pregnancy).

But in the meantime, if you already know you would like to help with any of that, please let me know! You can either just reply to this thread, send me a private message, or contact me by email (trang@tatoeba.org).

Thank you!

No, sorry, this is currently not an option.

Also, if the sentence you released was created a long time ago, you might not be able to see it in the "Latest contributions" even if you could filter by language, because the latest contributions are limited to 1000 entries.

Based on all the responses, the language team's choice is to go to the incantation bowl flag.

The new language icon for Jewish Babylonian Aramaic will look like this: https://imgur.com/v1WBPnY

We will make this change in the next couple of weeks, if there are no objections :)

For your information we are evaluating your suggestions at the moment.

Here's the small size versions of your flags, with screenshots of how it would look like in your language profile:

** Tatoeba Stream #18 **

There's a live stream scheduled tomorrow (Sunday) at 18:00 UTC.

https://youtu.be/XKSd_rIlpqc

I'll just be doing routine work on Tatoeba. There's the topic of quality control that I didn't have time to talk about in the last stream (#17) but that's going to be for another time since there's quite a lot of other things I need to catch up on.

See you around!

If you can understand 90%, then you know the language a bit. So it's OK to link :)

** Blind-linking **

A couple of weeks ago, some members raised awareness on issues around “blind-linking”, that is linking to a language that you don’t know at all. For instance, I don’t know Arabic at all, so if I link an existing English sentence to an existing Arabic sentence, that would be blind-linking.

The topic started in this thread:
https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_38617

My personal feeling was that blind-linking hasn’t really caused huge issues. But the sentiment turned out to be different for other members, and it seems that the issue is bigger than what I had perceived.

To be honest, I do not have data to evaluate how bad the situation is but I can definitely see how letting people link between whatever language they want can lead to a higher risk of mistake. My suggestion was that we could implement in the source code of Tatoeba a rule that restricts people to link only in languages listed in their profile.

Obviously, that doesn’t solve it all because one could always add every language to their profile if they wanted to link between all languages. But at least it gives some sort of implicit guideline as to what is a good practice and what is a bad practice. If I want to link an English sentence to an Arabic sentence, I would have to add Arabic to my profile. But if I have no intention to learn anything about Arabic, then it would be weird to add Arabic to my profile. As a result, I might think twice about linking and decide that it’s for the best if I don’t do it until I actually have an interest in learning Arabic.

In the thread where this topic started, there were a few people in favor of implementing this rule. I also personally think it makes sense to have this rule in place. But I would like to hear more opinions about this. As far as I’ve checked, there’s a non-negligible number of contributors who link from/to languages that are not in their profile. If you are one of them, I’m particularly interested to hear your thoughts on this. Would this make your life harder for no reason? Do you think it is a bad thing to discourage people from linking in languages that they don’t know at all?

Anyway, until we figure out what to do here, I would kindly ask everyone to avoid linking to languages they don’t know at all :)

Thanks!

Would you say it's a problem that is bad enough that we should completely prevent people from linking to a language that is not listed in their profile?

Is it a problem that happens with people who freshly became advanced contributors or is it an ongoing issue with all levels of contributors?

** Tatoeba Stream #17 **

There won't be the usual Sunday stream this week. Instead, the next stream will be on Wednesday, May 11 at 18:00 UTC.

https://youtu.be/a7D1rOrxSeU

I'll be talking about Tatoeba's finances and about quality control.

> If the general opinion here is that it's fine, and you all do it, I suppose
> I might start doing it, too.

Feel free to do it, or at least experiment with it. That is not something I would do myself, but I would say that it's fine as long as this practice isn't creating incorrect links, or at least not a harmful amount.

As far as I'm aware, we never had a strict rule that contributors should only link sentences in the languages that they know.

If it turns out to be a very problematic behavior, we can always change the source code so that people can only link sentences in languages in their profile. We can also track down which links have been created by a contributor who doesn't know the language they are linking to, and we can remove those links if it's really that bad.

Could you maybe send me the list of these websites? Or tell me the command that you used to extract this list :)

We should definitely approach them. Doing that once we have the multi-audio support ready, as Yorwba suggested, would be a very good idea, I think.

** Tatoeba Stream #16 **

There's a Tatoeba stream scheduled tomorrow (Sunday) at 18:00 UTC.

https://youtu.be/atPi8qTrxdY

There's a couple of interesting topics that have been discussed on the Wall lately, that I'd like to talk about in the stream:
- https://tatoeba.org/en/wall/sho...#message_38535

And if I have enough time I'd also like to talk about funding, donations, and finance stuff.

See you around!
