最近教育漢字を勉強しています。教育漢字の中には、2つの文字はTatoebaには入っていないです。「俵」も「后」をサーチしてもでないです。または、3つの字は文がありますが、今にはその文のオーナーはないです。「郡」、「鋼」、「蚕」。

There are two kanji from the "Kyoiku Kanji" list that don't appear in any example sentences in Tatoeba now. 俵 and 后. Additionally, there are three kanji from that list that appear only in orphan sentences. Specifically, the Japanese sentences are orphans. 郡, 鋼, and 蚕.

Auto-generated phonetic readings of Japanese sentences is dangerous. It will regularly get things wrong and learners won't find out for months or years, if ever.

What do you do then? An honest warning note would be so scary that I think most users would immediately say "No thanks!". Or not, but anyway, the warning note would need to be very clear. "Auto-generated kana is very often incorrect. Consult a fluent Japanese speaker to confirm the correctness of this information." And then people would naturally think, "Yeah, that's why I came to this website in the first place. Because it's supposed to have that kind of user-generated data. Right?"

I've been compiling sentences for flashcard-based study, and today I spent some time looking for kanji that aren't used much in the Corpus. Here are some kanji that are not contained in any adopted Japanese sentences linked to adopted English sentences.

From grade 4 (and the JLPT N3, maybe): 郡
From grade 5: 俵
From grade 6: 后鋼蚕
From JHS kanji (and thus the Joyo kanji):
From the JLPT N1, maybe:

Are there any sites anyone can recommend where I can paste a sentence in Japanese and get kana back? For example, http://nihongo.j-talk.com/ does the trick, but it has *many* mistakes.

AlanF_US:

The problem here is well known to anyone who used to use Japanese on Tatoeba.

The short version is: "Furigana is no longer shown for Japanese."

For Japanese and other languages with character sets as opposed to alphabets, when people are learning the languages, we start with a phonetic alphabet. This is often written in small letters just above the actual text. These small letters are called "rubies", and for Japanese specifically, the phonetic reading written adjacent to a word is called "furigana". Before the server trouble at the end of 2013, Tatoeba showed furigana (albeit with some errors).

Whether it is worth the admins' time to work on re-enabling furigana support is an open question. If there are other high quality free resources that work well in replacement of it, perhaps it is not necessary. Rikaichan works well as long as you are reading everything from within your web browser.

What I used to do was copy/paste sentences from Tatoeba into my Anki deck. Because the furigana was there was well, it was easy for me to put the Japanese sentence without kana on the front and the phonetic reading on the back.

I can use a dictionary or Rikaichan to find out the readings of the words one at a time, but unfortunately this adds a lot of time creating each flash card. Hmm...

What is the status of furigana support for Japanese?

I don't mean to say "Go fix it right now!", but rather to ask whether there is some tentative schedule on when it might be fixed. That would give me a sense of whether I need to find a substitute resource or whether I can wait patiently for this one.

I just spent an hour translating sentences along with some other folks on this site, and I felt pretty good about it, but now I am told to be more alert. Bummer, dude, right?

I like the idea of orphan sentences not showing up under searches. (Perhaps a settings option or a search query check box or something like that would be suitable.)

orcrist orcrist May 23, 2013 May 23, 2013 at 4:20:09 AM UTC link Permalink

I've had good results using unowned Japanese sentences to study. The error rate that I've observed is quite low. On rare occasions I look at my flash cards later, realize something is strange, and ask a Japanese friend to see what they think. But this has only happened maybe 5 times in the last year, so overall I'm rather happy.

(Also, the Japanese native speakers on this site who answer my questions and create example sentences have been a big help. I feel very lucky that they are around and active.)
