Do you think the test tube is really so big?
Well, the dilution could have been made before the (then already diluted) acid was filled into the test tube.
I think that person is unlikely to ask how much water was used to dilute the acid if he doesn't know (and ask about) the volume of concentrated acid. But maybe the dilution was made after the acid had been filled into the test tube. Maybe it was made in some other container. That's why I asked the author.
So let's wait for enlightenment. :)
What was on my mind when I wrote the sentence was diluting a measured volume of concentrated acid in a volumetric flask with water and then transfer some volume of the diluted acid into a test tube. Just like what brauchinet said :) If the person knew the volume of the volumetric flask in which the dilution was carried out, then that volume would be the answer to his question!
