Is it correct? Sounds a bit strange...
Maybe: There are no buts about it!

BraveSentry BraveSentry November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:15:05 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

i think a slang tag would make it correct.

Demetrius Demetrius November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:23:25 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I think it should be spelled with an apostrophe:
There're no but’s about it!

Because “buts” is a conjunction used as a noun. At least the Japanese has でも here…

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:23:52 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Well, I'm ready to add that tag to it, but what does the Japanese sentence mean?

We can just as well render it by: There's no but about it! (and then we don't need to add a slang tag). The sentence is orphan, but I didn't want to own it, as I'm not sure what the original (Japanese) reads.

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:25:26 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Ok, so I'll change it to: There's no but about it!
(you don't really have to add the apostrophe, as you can just as well say in English: Don't but me!
:)

Demetrius Demetrius November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:27:58 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

My Japanese is just a complete-beginner level, I just know "demo" means "but" :o

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:30:20 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Thanks! So, "There's no but about it!" would surely do the job, as well as sound normal English.

Shishir Shishir November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:30:58 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Don't change it :) this expression exists, "there's no buts", I've already heard it, it indicates that there's no way of discussing it, for example, when a father tells his son "you won't go out tonight, and there's not buts about it!" so the boy has to be quiet and accept it.

See here, another expression in which the word "buts" is in plural

http://dictionary.reference.com...no+ifs+or+buts

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:41:04 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Thanks, I do know "but" in the plural :)
I simply wanted this sentence to be normal English (rather than slang or colloquial), so instead of changing to "There are no buts about it", I left the "There's" and only changed "buts" to the singular (which is also possible in that same construction in English).

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:42:28 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I just now saw your comment. Is the new sentence something that isn't used so much?

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:44:38 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I checked it again, via Google. The current sentence has twice as much occurrences as the previous one, so I can leave it.

Shishir Shishir November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:50:33 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Oh ok... I had always heard/read "buts"; also, "there's no buts" appears much more often, but I accept my defeat :P

Eldad Eldad November 26, 2010 November 26, 2010 at 11:52:38 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

na, no defeat!
:) (anyhow, the Spanish is fine with "but" in the plural, so nothing has changed).
