There are many sentences in Tatoeba that use the verb "want" in the sense of "need". In American English, at least, this just sounds antiquated. No one would ever say it this way. I could adopt it and change it to "needs" but I've been told that it's better to contribute an alternate translation. The problem with this is that it leaves the strange-sounding sentence as a viable alternative, at least in the eyes of Tatoeba members who are learning English. A good dictionary distinguishes between obsolete, antiquated, slang and normal usages. How can we do that here? Tags? Eliminating it? Or the more sentences the merrier?
AFAIK the standard is to tag it (add an alternative) and move on...
I hadn't thought of the research point of view. In any case, I'll leave it in your white-listing hands. It's a hell of a mopping up job you're doing! I guess I'll just suggest tags for the more egregious sentences I come across. Cheers!

Be careful with statements like that - they are very often incorrect. I don't know if this is actually 'British English' as such, but it doesn't sound odd or unusual to me.
