If you imagine that this instruction is printed on a medicine bottle, then it starts to sound more natural.
The Italian says " Take the medicine" . I'm not a native speaker but I doubt that " Prendi la medicina" would be printed on a medicine botte, because if I'm not mistaken, "prendi" is the second person singular, in other words the familiar address.
