The current "She substituted margarine for butter" seems a bit odd. The Japanese verb (塗る) really means to spread or smear. A better translation would be "She spread margarine instead of butter."
That English OK for the other two linked Japanese sentences.
I wouldn't mention toast if it's not in the Japanese - it could be a biscuit, cracker, etc.
