I believe that the English means something else, rather than:
Do you read anything in the library?

Eldad Eldad April 10, 2012 April 10, 2012 at 12:53:37 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

I've just rendered it in Hebrew, saying something like:
Do you sometimes learn in the library?

(BTW, you also left out the word "sometimes" in your translation).

Eldad Eldad April 10, 2012 April 10, 2012 at 12:54:34 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Or:
Are you sometimes engaged in a research in the library?

Eldad Eldad April 10, 2012 April 10, 2012 at 1:07:52 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

sometimes = иногда

Eldad Eldad April 10, 2012 April 10, 2012 at 1:18:48 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Yes, exactly, когда-нибудь translates perfectly the word "sometimes" in this context. This is what I intended.
Thanks for your corrections.

@corvard,
We still need to examine this translation.

Currently, it means:
Do you sometimes carry out searches in the library?

"study" is something else.
It can be "learning" or "conducting a research" [not "search", which is different].

Sentence corrected.

Mi ankaŭ aldonas la frazon:
Ты когда-нибудь занимаешься в библиотеке?

Dear Eldad,
> Yes, exactly, когда-нибудь translates perfectly the word "sometimes" in this context.
I don't think so.
"Когда-нибудь" = some day, one day
And I wouldn't employ the verb "учишься" in this context.
"Учиться" is a long process. For example: учиться в школе (университете), учиться читать, учиться хорошим манерам and so on.

I'd suggest:
"Ты иногда занимаешься в библиотеке?"

But I wonder what should we do with this sentence:

Thank you, marafon.

If it already exists, then we probably need to delete the current sentence - unless you can suggest another Russian variant instead, which is not identical to the already existing one.

marafon marafon December 15, 2012 December 15, 2012 at 11:37:23 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

For now I can not think of anything better than "Ты иногда занимаешься в библиотеке?"
Maybe you're right: we should delete this sentence and correct that one: http://tatoeba.org/rus/sentences/show/1536226

I'm afraid, there are not many options to translate "to study" into Russian in the context provided in the sentence. We can't use "учишься" here since it will sound unnatural and senseless a bit. At the moment I see only one way to save this sentence from deletion. :-)
"Ты занимаештся в библиотеке иногда?"

2marafon
Опоздал малость :-)

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2012 December 15, 2012 at 11:48:09 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

To my (Russian ;-)) ears, "Ty inogda..." ITD sounds better than "Ty ... v biblioteke inogda". Do you really think we can change the above sentence to:
"Ты занимаештся в библиотеке иногда?"
Will it sound OK in Russian?

marafon marafon December 15, 2012 December 15, 2012 at 11:52:40 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

> "Ty inogda..." ITD sounds better than "Ty ... v biblioteke inogda".
I prefer "Ты иногда занимаешься в библиотеке?", but
"Ты занимаешься в библиотеке иногда?" is OK.

Thank you, sharptoothed!

sharptoothed sharptoothed December 15, 2012 December 15, 2012 at 11:54:52 AM UTC flag Report link Permalink

Ummm... Both variants are good, I think. The difference is not significant and it's rather a matter of taste which one to choose. :-)

Eldad Eldad December 15, 2012 December 15, 2012 at 12:08:06 PM UTC flag Report link Permalink

OK, changed.
Thank you both!
