    So, it could be either "esseva" or "era". I guess "esseva" represents the imperfect past tense.

    There is an optional irregular form of the simple past tense of "esser", which is "era".

    "Il" is the impersonal subject, which in English is "it". Another example of its use is "il pluve" = it rains.
