*** New feature on http://dev.tatoeba.org ***
When performing a search, matched words are now highlighted in the results. Note that due to technical limitations, searching on dev.tatoeba.org will only return old sentences.
Example: http://dev.tatoeba.org/sentence...h?query=puzzle
cool!
This works really nicely with wildcards, too. I'm looking forward to this feature being available on the main site.

Looks like a limitation of Sphinx. I reported the problem to them.
Here's an example of a search using the * wildcard where highlighting worked correctly:
https://dev.tatoeba.org/eng/sen...rom=und&to=und
And here's another:

did you try #*$highlight#*$ ?
Yes, I'm sure it's the wildcard.
In English, which has stemming, adding the * to the end of "highlight" doesn't make a difference, because words like "highlighted" would be found anyway. (Adding a * to the beginning would catch words like "prehighlighted", but we don't have any such sentences.)
However, in Hebrew, which does not have stemming, the search for צטרכ, as opposed to *צטרכ*, doesn't find any results, because it's not a word on its own. (In fact, it's not a stem, either.) But when you search with the asterisks, words such as הצטרכת (note the extra letters at the beginning and end) are correctly highlighted.
You can see this in English as well. Search for "highli*", which is not a stem, and "highlighted", etc., will be found.

I prefer not to use bold because it renders some characters nearly unreadable, like complex kanjis. While natives are capable of deciphering bold or otherwise badly written ideograms, I assume most learners are not.
By the way, the Chinese version of Google uses red color and underlining: https://encrypted.google.com/se...6%E7%9C%8B%22. But the Japanese version uses bold. Go figure.
