I've been translating a few sentences into my native language (English) and have run across something that I haven't found an explanation for.

What I'm wondering about are Sentences that have Indirect Translations which are displayed in the lists I have of phrases that need English translations.

Am I correct in concluding that where English sentences appear that are indirect translations, this means that the original was first translated into some other language and then from that translation the English version which is shown was produced?

Is there somewhere in the documentation where this process is explained in more detail?

Yes, a gray sentence is a related translation created when a translation is translated. You can see the explanation in our FAQ. The basic thing you have to understand is that there's no such a thing as an "original sentence". When new translations are written, they become original with respect to the translations that will be created for it and so on. This is why you only have to pay attention to the sentence you're translating from: the one in big, black letters. Sometimes related translations happen to match: this is why we have linking tools, which are accessible to advanced contributors and above. You can become an advanecd contributor when you get used to how the project works.
