I vote for one of these instead:

Today is the birthday of one of my friends.
Today one of my friends has a birthday.

This 2nd one will not match the Japanese.
(Today one of my friends has a birthday.)

Note that there is nothing wrong with the current sentence and we hear this kind of usage often.

If you look closer at those examples, you'll find that many of them consist of people wondering whether the usage is correct, since it sounds awkward. In particular, they wonder whether they should instead be saying "Today is one of my friends' birthdays." Rewording the sentence makes it sound smoother.
