This is a pretty peculiar sentence in English. Is there a better translation for the Japanese?

Apart from perhaps rewording "Cooking Level" I can't think of an appropriate change. Yes, it's a peculiar sentence in both languages.

"That's not a fail" is what threw me. I wonder if this is from a tv show or something.

赤点じゃない(のさ) is OK. (赤点 = fail grade/mark) I don't think it is a quotation of anything in particular.

It may not be 'a quotation' (in the sense of quoted from a notable source) but the Japanese is /quoted/. It can have a [Manga] tag (although technically I think it was 'manga-style computer game).

That makes sense then. Thanks for clearing it up for me guys.

I'll leave that to you experts 8-)}

Yeah, I'm not sure about the 'cooking level' bit. Specifically I haven't come across phrases like お料理レベル being used about that sort of score. It may be equally odd in the Japanese and English (in which case you can write it off as 'manga style') but it may not.

I wouldn't object at all if it was changed to "score in Cooking" or something.

"score in Cooking" makes it sound more like an RPG than a school cookery class, which is appropriate. I'll make that change.

Just for my own understanding, since I'm pretty new here, is there anything in the Japanese that marks this for where it came from? There are a number of things where knowing the source makes it much easier to make the right choice in translation. I had a similar issue w/ a Chinese sentence the other day.

In Tatoeba itself, for the moment we don't have implemented a way to tag sentences (though it's planned). So far the only way one has to add/read meta informations about a sentence is the comments

10 years have passed, tag function was implemented :D

Should this still be tagged "manga style" or something?

JimBreen JimBreen ٢٦ يناير ٢٠٢١ ٢٦ يناير ٢٠٢١ ٢:٣٦:٤٥ ص UTC link Permalink

I'll leave it to the experts. I'm not into tags.

If tagged, then only the Japanese sentence, in my opinion.
There isn't really an English language "manga style."
Perhaps, even this Japanese shouldn't have a "manga style" tag.

This English sentence is strange enough that I don't use it in my projects.

Right now my Cooking Level is about 45 out of 100. Great isn't it? That's not a fail!
