Quick question : would anyone be sad if we removed the "random sentence" on the homepage?
I have plans move it to the bottom, and have the "latest contributions" displayed first instead. But if there's no objection, I'll just remove it completely.

While I probably wouldn't miss it, I feel like having Random Sentence on top is helpful to let newbies or first-time-visitors get a quick idea of what Tatoeba is. You see a sentence in a language, and translations of it in other languages, and can immediately translate it if you wish to.

I like random sentences, but I don't want to see there a sentence with more than ten translations.

It shows immediately how the translations are structured. So it's useful for newbies. But I also agree with tommy_san, a sentence with 10+ translations would be too much... an idea would be to collapse more than, say, 5 translations and put a little link "More..." there or fade out the 6th translation into white.
I often translate random sentences from the homepage, it's quick and convenient. I'd miss this feature.

The random sentence is convenient, as would the intro video... if it were to come back? :) [hopeful]
The intro video still exists for new members who don't have a login. If you log out from the site and then open main page again you'll see it.

I changed the language of the user-interface to see if it was any different (even Russian), and still I do not get the video on my homepage. I USED to see the intro video maybe up until April or May, but I haven't seen it here in a long time.

Did you try to clean your browser's cache?
I don't know what that means, so I guess I did not. I just tried opening the page on a co-worker's computer and it looks like your screenshot, so I'm guessing there won't be any problems for newcomers :)

Yes, I'd totally miss it. I use this feature quite often to start translating sentences as soon as I enter the home page.
But I agree with Vortarulo's suggestion. A "Show more" button for random sentences with more than 5 translations would be very helpful.

I welcome pushing it to the bottom but I would certainly prefer for it to stay on the front page.
I suggest adding a random sentence without translations as the last sentence in the "Latest contribution" - like this:

But in this way you wouldn't immediatly see if the sentence is already translated into your language and if it's worth bothering to click on it. That would be also an easy way to introduce duplicates while translating directly from the home page.
I agree with you. I also often link English-Russian random sentences when they mean the same thing but aren't directly linked.
It occurred to me that maybe we should think about the random sentences on http://tatoeba.org/home and http://tatoeba.org/ separately.
The former is what we always see. The latter is a page you can only see when you're not logged in. Many newcomers would visit this page and decide if it's a good site or not. If they happen to see a weird sentence, they might leave us forever. If they happen to see a sentence without translations or with only one translation, they might fail to understand what Tatoeba is. I doubt many of them would take the trouble to see another random sentence or watch the video.
So here are some suggestions about the random sentences on http://tatoeba.org/.
- Unowned sentences (and translations) are not displayed.
- Unappoved sentences (and translations) are not displayed.
- Only sentences with translations in 2 (maybe even 5) or more languages are displayed.

I completely agree with the two first points, but why should only the sentences with translations in 2 or more languages be displayed?
Eine sehr berechtigte Frage, wie ich finde, bietet der Zufallssatz doch auch die Möglichkeit, bisher unübersetzte Sätze mit einer Übersetzung zu versehen.
If you come to Tatoeba for the first time and see an untranslated sentence, you might think that we collect single sentences without translations.
If you come to Tatoeba for the first time and see a sentence with only one translation, you might think it's another one of these website where they collect sentence pairs (for example in English and Japanese). They'd fail to understand the multilingualism that makes Tatoeba truly unique.
I'm talking about the random sentence for people who are not logged in. More precisely,
(a) the random sentence on http://tatoeba.org/ (by which I don't mean the page you see when you click this link; you will be redirected to (c). I mean the page this page that you can only see when you're not logged in: http://prntscr.com/5gmvfx)
and
(b) the random sentence on http://tatoeba.org/home when you're not logged in (I forgot to mention this above).
In
(c) the random sentence on http://tatoeba.org/home when you're logged in,
I think we should see everything. It's a good chance for us contributors to find a sentence to translate or correct.
I also agree with the first two points. As for the third one, if it is considered important, people could be allowed to specify in their settings if there should be a minimal number of translations (perhaps along with some other customisations including whether or not the random sentence should be displayed at all). If there is an advantage to it, the default setting could be two or larger.
I like the random sentence. I think it's fun because it's random!
