Could someone please explain the literal and figurative meanings of this sentence? Based on the German and Esperanto, I'm guessing it can mean something like "Monica barely learned anything."

I think it's rather "Monica did badly (at school)".

с горем (с грехом) пополам = кое-как, плохо (with difficulty)
училась = studied

The literal meaning won't help you much. It's something like it was half studying half torture.

Monika hat kaum etwas gelernt = ihr wurde kaum etwas beigebracht, oder sie hat kaum etwas verstanden.

Monika hat kaum gelernt = statt für die Schule zu lernen, hat sie gespielt. Entweder war sie faul, oder sie war so klug, daß sie kaum lernen mußte.
