"... war er verblüfft." oder "... erstarrte er vor Schreck." ist natürlicher für die deutschen Sätze. ("verblüfft" sollte hier einen Zustand beschreiben.) Im Passiv [= er wurde verblüfft] klingt es wie ein neues Geschehen: Erst hörte er die Nachricht und dann passierte etwas, das ihn verblüffte. Doch so wie ich den Satz verstehe, war die Nachricht der Grund für seine Verblüffung.

Oder noch kürzer: "Die Nachricht verblüffte ihn." ;)
