Khuda Haafiz is the conventional Islamic term for saying "Goodbye".

Used a lot in India. Probably originates from the linked Persian. I always assumed it would have its origin in Arabic, but then you'd have noticed that, wouldn't you, saeb?
well the 'haafiz' part comes from an arabic root that has to do with protection...but the word itself is not used in any kind of greeting I know of...
Yeah, now that you mention in, "hafzat" in Hindi does mean "protection". I should add a sentence with that word. :-P
so I guess it's a loanword used in a persian sense
It's "hifaazat" not "hafzat"... my brain is acting up.
