I'm wondering how many of the people who use Launchpad to translate our user interface read the Wall, and vice versa. If you have used Launchpad to translate our user interface, or if you haven't but might be interested in doing it, please leave a reply to this message.
One motivation for my question is that I'm trying to find a good way of reaching the translators on Launchpad. There is an announcement feature that publishes news about the project throughout Launchpad, but I'm not sure there's an efficient way of reaching the translators who are already signed up to work on Tatoeba. If you know anything about this, or even better, if you're interested in coordinating communication with user interface translators, please let me know.
As far as I know, most of those who translate the Tatoeba user interface on Launchpad are contributors (or former contributors) of Tatoeba. Here you can see lots of familiar names as the top contributors on Launchpad:

I think this is a good tendency. It's best that we take care of our UI ourselves since we know Tatoeba better than anyone else. It'd be nice if the major contributors of each language would join Launchpad and improve our UI translations.
Some people are not included in this list ...
Since it's a list of top contributors, it makes sense that some people would not be included. Perhaps some past contributors no longer have accounts at Launchpad, which would also explain why they don't appear in the list.
I don't want to argue but it's not the case here.
Thanks for that list, Tommy. Thanks also for recommending some UI cleanup in the past (unglobalized strings and so on), which I've done.
And, of course, thanks for improving so much of the Japanese UI.
Lohnt es überhaupt, an der Übersetzung der Benutzeroberfläche bei Launchpad zu arbeiten? Ich habe letztes Jahr einige Änderungen vorgenommen; die sind aber noch immer nicht umgesetzt worden.

In fact, the reason I asked about this is that I have been working to get the existing translations checked in. Now we just need to move them over to the server, which we are planning to do within the next few weeks. I want to encourage people to do the translations, since they'll see the results of their work, but first I wanted to find the best way(s) to reach them.

Ich habe in der Vergangenheit gehört, daß es recht aufwendig sei, die Übersetzungen freizuschalten. Kannst Du das bestätigen? Sollten wir Übersetzer uns also beeilen, mit den wichtigsten Übersetzungen fertig zu werden, bevor die Benutzeroberfläche in einigen Wochen aktualisiert wird? Oder kann der Prozeß danach auf Anfrage, wenn jemand mehrere Änderungen vorgenommen hat, in absehbarer Zeit wiederholt werden?

Je pense que vous confondez l'indexation des phrases du corpus et la publication des traductions de l'interface utilisateur, effectuées dans Launchpad.
Ces deux processus ne sont pas reliés.
Publier les traductions Launchpad, si l'interface n'a pas changé, est une opération triviale.
Si elle a changé, c'est plus compliqué.
Mais l'interface de Tatoeba n'a guère changé depuis très longtemps...
En revanche, pour ce que j'en sais, et je le déplore, l'indexation des phrases est une opération lourde...
Il vaut mieux utiliser la recherche Google, qui lui, indexe les phrases indépendamment, comme toutes les pages web...

In the past, I've heard that it takes a lot of effort to release the translations. Can you confirm that? Should we translators hurry to finish the most important translations before the UI is updated in a few weeks? Or can the process be repeated on demand, in the near future, when someone has made changes?
My answer:
The process of transferring translations to their final destination has become a good deal easier in the past few weeks, so yes, the process of releasing the UI can be repeated much more frequently. Without getting into the details of what has changed, I can tell you the following:
- It's better to translate early rather than late so that the results of your translations can be seen sooner.
- While Launchpad itself automatically loses any translation if the corresponding English text changes (even if it's just to fix a typo), I have a process that ensures that existing translations can be carried over. Thus, you don't need to worry that your work will be lost.
- A very small number of strings may change in the next few weeks, but it doesn't make sense to wait for those changes.
I notice by the way, that German is very close to being entirely translated: only nine strings left! Nice job!
