Tried to go for a free but natural sounding translation. Literal would be something like Toen haar werd gevraagd naar haar werk zei ze ‘Aangezien mijn werk ingewikkeld is kan ik het niet in een enkel woord samenvatten’. Note also that there are no real indirect quotations in Japanese and as a result direct quotations are much more used than in Dutch (or English), that is, also in instances where we might prefer an indirect quote.
