Please remove the Latin in brackets and write the first word capitalized.

Ще потрібна кома після "привіт".

No response in two weeks, corrected.

Why not vocative?

deniko deniko March 1, 2017 March 1, 2017 at 4:08:39 PM UTC link Permalink

Vocative is kind of optional, especially in colloquial speech.

I personally do use vocative all the time, but I know a lot of people who don't. Whatever the textbooks say, from the point of view of descriptive linguistics (and I'm a firm believer in descriptive, not prescriptive linguistics), you don't have to use vocative.

So I made a minimal change to make this sentence correct. Besides, a variant with "світе" already exists ;)

EDIT: And I'm impressed you noticed that!

EDIT2: "Привіт, світ" has a charm of its own cause it kind of rhymes, unlike "Привіт, світе".

I see. :)
Personally I'm kinda facinated with vocative, and find it cool, that it's still in use in many Slavic languages.

deniko deniko March 1, 2017 March 1, 2017 at 4:15:47 PM UTC link Permalink

Yeah, I like it too.

It's in use in Russian as well, as far as I understand, but only in some old-fashioned words and expressions, I guess, like "О боже!", "Господи Иисусе!", and also in colloquial speech ("Юль/Маш/Жень, иди сюда!").

In Ukrainian it is, of course, more widespread.

Yes, many lingiusts consider those shorten forms of names as "new vocative" in Russian. "Господи", "Боже", "Отче наш" are borrowed from Church Slavic, which has vocative and is rather close as far as I know to modern Southern Slavic languages.
