この彼は駅伝か何かの選手なのかと思いました(^_^;)
「逃走した」にしませんか？

runの定義の一つ、"to leave a place quickly by running" という意味で使われていると考えれば、「逃走」という言葉に変えなくてもいいんじゃないでしょうか。個人的に、「逃走」という言葉からは「悪いことをして逃げる」というイメージしかないので。この文章だけでは悪いことをしたかどうかわかりませんし。ただ単に警察と係わりたくない人なのかもしれません。（想像膨らませすぎ？）

とはいえ、「警官を見る→逃げる」のパターンは誰しも思うことでしょうから、「逃走した」を使った文は追加すればいいんじゃないかと思います。

「走った」に多少違和感がないこともないのですが、変えるとしたら「走り出した」とかどうでしょう。

「走り出した」はいいですね。
「見て走った」というと「見ながら走った」という感じがしてしまう（「トムの背中を見て走った」とか）ので、"saw → ran" という時間関係をどこかで示す必要があるんじゃないかと思います。

あ、でも「走り出した」というと、警察を見る前は歩いていたように感じるのに対して、この英文は、警察を見る前は止まって何かをしていた印象を受ける気もします。そうとも限らないでしょうか？

どうなんでしょうね。どちらもありのような気もします。

「友達と立ち話→警察を見た→『ごめん、急用思い出した！』→走り出した」

「歩いていた→警察を見た→走り出した」が一番自然な流れだとは思いますが。

それとも「駆け出す」の方がいいかな。

「走る」関連では「駆け出す」が一番しっくりくる気がします。
他のはどれがOKでどれが微妙なのかよく分からなくなってしまいましたが、「～見て駆け出した」はこれまで考えた全部のパターンに当てはまりますし、一番いいのではないかと思います。

問題はこれが英文とマッチしているかですね。ぼくはやっぱりこの英文は、単に駆け出したというより、警察から逃げようとして駆け出したという感じがするんです。それが、「彼」が警察にばれたらまずいことをしていたからにしても、単に警察が怖くて避けたいだけにしても。

仮に英文に「逃走」のニュアンスがあるとしても、「駆け出す」には「急いで」という意味が含まれている感じがするので、英文から離れた意味にはならないと思うのですが・・・。

いずれにせよ、日本語の方は「駆け出す」に変更します。

Are these three all exactly the same? If they're not, what's the difference?

He ran when he saw the policeman.
He ran away when he saw the policeman.
He started to run when he saw the policeman.

I will try to explain my feeling about the differences. But English is not my native language so I could be wrong.


1) He ran when he saw the policeman.

This sentences doesn't specify where he ran. We only know that he ran. Most likely, he ran away. But he could have run towards the policeman.


2) He ran away when he saw the policeman.

This sentence is more specific and doesn't leave any ambiguity about where the person ran.


3) He started to run when he saw the policeman.

This sentence seems to imply that something will happen after he started to run. Because if he only ran, and nothing happens, you can just say "he ran". But if you say "he started to run...", I imagine that something will stop him from running.


In the end, when I imagine these three sentences, I see the same thing in my head. But each of them give a different feeling.
Maybe someone will be able to explain better the differences, but that's the differences for me ^^
