*The human skull ...

According to the renowned anatomy textbook of Henry Gray, the skull consists not of 23, but of 22 bones: http://www.bartleby.com/107/30.html. I would suggest changing the sentence.

Os hyoideum (hyoid bone, lingual bone) is not a bone anymore? :-)

I see. So that is the bone that makes for a total number of 23? Maybe it is not counted because it is connected to the rest of the skeleton only by ligaments.

> So that is the bone that makes for a total number of 23?
I guess so. Though I'm not a real doctor. :-)

I think I got it sorted out now. The number in Gray’s Anatomy does not include the hyoid bone nor the six ossicles, since these are not directly connected to the skull. If we count the hyoid bone, we should also count the ossicles, which makes me want to renew my suggestion, unless someone can quote another textbook that says the skull consists of 23 bones. What do you think? ☺

One more remark: I have learnt that the frontal bone is sometimes considered to be paired, even though it becomes fused into one bone as a human reaches adulthood. That would make for a total number of 30 bones. ☺

Bones, bones, bones — count them all. :)
But content matters too. :D

Most of the Russian anatomy atlases I saw (for example, http://anatomiya-atlas.ru/?page_id=111) state there are 23 bones in the human skull. The hyoid bone is considered among those bones since it's close in its evolution to the facial bones. That's all I know. :-)

Actually, we all know that the scull is a bone itself. :-)

@Dmitry: Thanks. So that's where the 23 comes from. I think I'll adopt the German sentence then and add a remark.
@CK: I tried that. The number 22 has the most hits, but that may be because of the language. If it's widespread tradition in Russia to include the hyoid bone in the count, I can accept that sentence. ☺

In Russian
"череп человека * 22 костей" ("human skull * 22 bones") ~ 34,600 results
"череп человека * 23 костей" ("human skull * 23 bones") ~ 36,400 results
Conclusion: nobody knows how many bones in the human scull for sure. :-)
